According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the pursuit began shortly after midnight when officers observed a Dodge Challenger traveling eastbound on Highway 180 near Clovis Avenue at speeds approaching 130 miles per hour. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver accelerated, reaching speeds up to 150 miles per hour as he exited the highway at Temperance Avenue.
Tragically, the driver lost control of the vehicle on the off-ramp. The car became airborne and overturned multiple times, ejecting the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt. Emergency responders arrived promptly and attempted life-saving measures, but Derrick was pronounced dead at the scene.
