​Tragic Loss: 18-Year-Old Nyla Simmons Dies After Falling from SUV and Being Struck by Fire Truck in St. Louis

The St. Louis community is mourning the tragic loss of 18-year-old Nyla Simmons, who died on the night of April 26, 2025, after falling from the roof of a moving SUV and being struck by a fire truck responding to an emergency call.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. at the intersection of Chouteau Avenue and South Compton Avenue. Nyla was dancing atop a Cadillac Escalade that had stopped at a red light. As the vehicle made a left turn, she lost her balance and fell onto the pavement. Moments later, she was struck by a fire truck with activated lights and sirens. All drivers involved remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Nyla, a recent graduate of Parkway North High School, was set to begin classes at the Grabber School of Hair Design on the following Monday. Her parents, Everett and Letrice Simmons, described her as a vibrant, social young woman who loved spending time with friends. They emphasized the importance of safety and urged others to learn from this tragedy.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The community continues to grieve the loss of a young life full of promise.
