Floyds Knobs, Indiana Mourns the Tragic Loss of High School Student Noah Maddox
A tight-knit southern Indiana community is grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss of a beloved high school student. Noah Maddox, a junior football player at Floyd Central High School, tragically passed away on Friday evening, April 25, 2025, in an accidental drowning. This loss has left his family, friends, and the entire Floyd County community reeling from the shock of his untimely death.
According to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, they received a call around 8 p.m. on Friday evening, requesting assistance at the Highland Lake subdivision, which lies between Georgetown and Greenville. The call indicated that a person was missing and believed to be in the lake. First responders immediately rushed to the scene to begin a rescue and recovery operation. After more than two hours of intense searching, the body of the teenage boy was discovered in the lake. Noah Maddox was pronounced dead at the scene.
Friends and family have been left devastated by this sudden loss, describing Noah as an incredible young man who touched the lives of everyone around him. His passing has left a hole in the hearts of all who knew him. Noah’s death was ruled an accidental drowning, and as the community comes to terms with his passing, tributes are pouring in from his peers, teachers, and coaches who remember him as a dedicated student, athlete, and friend.
“He’s just a great guy. I have a lot of memories with him,” said Tyler Mulhall, a freshman at Floyd Central who played alongside Noah on the football team. Mulhall described Noah as not only a teammate but a mentor and friend who had a significant impact on his life. “He was real funny. He was always there for me and whoever needed it. He’s taught me pretty much everything I know. I was real close to him. I’m going to miss him,” Mulhall added with visible emotion.
Noah Maddox had been out for a team fundraiser that evening, and although Mulhall wasn’t with him at the time of the incident, he learned of the tragic news when he saw their head coach receive a call and instruct others to call 911. Noah was with other individuals during the fundraiser, and Mulhall expressed his heartache and support for them as well as Noah’s family during this unimaginably difficult time. “My heart goes out to them and his family,” he said.
In the wake of Noah’s death, students and friends have gathered multiple times at the Floyd Central football field to grieve, share memories, and support one another. The locker room, a place that once echoed with the sounds of laughter and camaraderie, now holds a somber significance as students leave mementos and notes at Noah’s locker, honoring his memory. The outpouring of love and support from the school community has been a testament to the deep impact Noah had on those around him.
In a statement released on Saturday, the New Albany-Floyd County School District (NAFCS) extended their condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of Noah Maddox. Superintendent Travis G. Madison posted a heartfelt letter on the district’s Facebook page, acknowledging the loss of a bright young student and athlete. He shared that counselors and support staff would be available for students, staff, and community members who need assistance coping with this tragic event.
“Please know that we are here for each other during this time of loss,” Madison wrote. “Our thoughts are with the Maddox family, and we stand together as a community to support one another.”
Noah’s untimely death has brought the community together, and while they grieve the loss of such a promising young life, they also celebrate the joy and positivity he brought to those around him. From his infectious sense of humor to his role as a mentor to his teammates, Noah was loved and admired by many. He will be remembered for his spirit, his kindness, and the legacy of love and support he leaves behind.
As the community continues to process this loss, the memories of Noah Maddox will remain alive in the hearts of those who knew him. His family, friends, and the Floyd Central football team will carry his memory forward, honoring his life by supporting one another and cherishing the moments they shared with him. The grief may be heavy now, but Noah’s impact on their lives will continue to shine brightly, as a reminder of the importance of kindness, friendship, and community.
A memorial service for Noah Maddox will be held at a later date, providing friends, family, and the community an opportunity to celebrate his life and say their final goodbyes. Until then, the pain of his absence will be felt by all, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Rest in peace, Noah.
