A Life of Adventure and Service

Bernice’s journey began in Hawaii, where she grew up surfing the south shore of Oahu. Her love for water and adventure eventually led her to Montana, where she co-founded Montana River Guides with her husband, Mike Johnston, in 1994. Together, they built a company renowned for offering exceptional whitewater rafting, kayaking, and riverboarding experiences on the Clark Fork and Blackfoot Rivers. Bernice was not only the reservations manager but also the heart and soul of the operation, known for her legendary BBQs and homemade brownies that welcomed guests with warmth and hospitality.

Beyond her entrepreneurial endeavors, Bernice was deeply committed to community service. She volunteered for a decade at the Missoula YWCA as a facilitator for women’s programs, demonstrating her dedication to empowering others. Her academic achievements included a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of Montana, reflecting her passion for mental health and well-being.

Inspiring Through Movement

Bernice’s influence extended into the realm of fitness and wellness through her role as an Oula dance fitness instructor. Oula, a dance workout that combines cardio with emotional expression, was a perfect fit for Bernice’s vibrant energy and commitment to holistic health.
