In Memoriam: Aman Grewal, Former President of the British Columbia Nurses’ Union (BCNU)
A Legacy of Leadership, Compassion, and Courage in Nursing
The nursing profession in British Columbia and across Canada is in mourning following the untimely passing of Aman Grewal, who served as President of the British Columbia Nurses’ Union (BCNU) from 2021 until her death in 2023. A visionary leader, tireless advocate, and steadfast voice for nurses and frontline healthcare workers, Grewal’s legacy will long be remembered by her colleagues, community, and all those whose lives she touched.
During a time of unprecedented challenges in healthcare—amidst a global pandemic, staffing shortages, and increasing mental health strain—Aman Grewal stood at the forefront. Her presidency was marked by unwavering commitment, strength, and compassion. She not only represented nurses with fierce dedication but did so with integrity, empathy, and a deep understanding of the systemic issues facing healthcare in British Columbia.
Aman began her nursing journey with a heart for service and a passion for justice. Her years of experience at the bedside translated seamlessly into her work as a union leader, where she championed safe working conditions, improved staffing ratios, and the mental health and well-being of all healthcare professionals. She was not afraid to raise her voice when it mattered most—advocating publicly for pandemic protections, equitable pay, and respect for the profession she so deeply loved.
Those who worked closely with Aman describe her as fierce yet compassionate, pragmatic yet visionary. She had the rare ability to unite people across differences, inspiring collective strength in a workforce often stretched to its limits. Under her leadership, the BCNU not only navigated turbulent times but also emerged stronger, more connected, and more vocal about the future nurses deserve.
In addition to her professional achievements, Aman Grewal was known for her personal warmth, generosity, and mentorship. She uplifted others, especially young nurses and union members, encouraging them to lead, speak up, and stay rooted in their values. Her presence in any room was one of calm confidence and thoughtful conviction—traits that inspired many to follow her example.
While her passing leaves a significant void, her contributions continue to shape the BCNU and the broader healthcare landscape in Canada. Tributes from healthcare professionals, unions, advocacy organizations, and government leaders have poured in, recognizing Aman’s invaluable role in advocating for systemic change and her heartfelt dedication to those on the front lines of care.
In a joint statement, the BCNU said:
“We are heartbroken by the loss of Aman Grewal, a remarkable leader and a passionate nurse whose legacy will continue to guide us. Her tireless work has advanced the rights of nurses, strengthened our union, and brought dignity to countless lives. She leaves behind a powerful example of what leadership looks like in the face of adversity.”
Aman is survived by her loving family, including her spouse and children, as well as an extended family of colleagues, friends, and nurses across the province who continue to carry forward her mission of justice and compassion in healthcare.
Plans for a public memorial service are underway, with details to be shared by the BCNU. In honor of Aman’s memory, the union has also announced the establishment of the Aman Grewal Leadership Scholarship, which will support emerging nurse leaders committed to advocacy, equity, and transformative care.
As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the life of a woman who fought for better, demanded more, and gave everything she had to those who dedicate their lives to healing others. Aman Grewal was more than a leader—she was a force of nature, a source of light, and a lasting symbol of courage in nursing.
Rest in power, Aman. Your work lives on in every nurse you stood beside, every voice you amplified, and every patient who received better care because you dared to lead.
