In Loving Memory of Aman Grewal (Former President, BC Nurses’ Union)
Champion of Compassion, Leadership, and Advocacy in Nursing

The BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) community and the broader healthcare sector are mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Aman Grewal, who passed away unexpectedly. Aman served as President of the BCNU from 2021 to 2023—a period marked by unprecedented challenges and profound transformation within the nursing profession. Her passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew her and in the community she served so passionately.

Aman Grewal was more than a leader; she was a beacon of strength, compassion, and resolve. Throughout her distinguished 35-year nursing career, she was a fierce advocate for the rights, well-being, and voices of nurses across British Columbia and Canada. Her journey began at Surrey Memorial Hospital, where she specialized in pediatrics and pediatric emergency care. Her hands-on experience as a frontline nurse shaped her empathetic and tireless leadership style.

Rising through the ranks of the BCNU, Aman served as a steward, occupational health and safety representative, and regional executive council member before becoming Vice President in 2019. In 2021, amid a global health crisis, she assumed the role of President. Her tenure was marked by grace under pressure as she led thousands of nurses through one of the most challenging periods in modern healthcare history.

Aman championed critical initiatives during her presidency, including securing government commitments to implement nurse-patient ratios—an achievement that marked a turning point for nursing care in the province. She was also a strong voice for Indigenous reconciliation, equity in healthcare, and the urgent need to support nurses facing burnout, mental health struggles, and staffing shortages.

Those who worked with Aman remember her not only for her strategic vision and tenacity but also for her kindness, humility, and deep-rooted commitment to justice. She believed in the power of unity and collective action, and she dedicated her life to building a safer, more supportive environment for those who dedicate theirs to caring for others.

Outside of her professional achievements, Aman was a devoted family member, friend, and mentor. Her vibrant presence, infectious smile, and generous spirit touched countless lives—both within and beyond the nursing community.

She is survived by her loving family, friends, colleagues, and the many nurses who found inspiration and hope in her leadership. Her memory will live on through the countless positive changes she helped bring about and the people she empowered along the way.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date, where family, friends, and colleagues will come together to honor her extraordinary legacy.

Aman Grewal’s life was a testament to resilience, empathy, and action. She will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire generations to come.
