Deadly Shooting Near TSU Sparks Panic, Lockdowns — Suspects Remain at Large
Houston, TX — Tensions ran high near Texas Southern University (TSU) on Wednesday afternoon after a fatal shooting claimed the life of one man and triggered an immediate shelter-in-place order across campus. The shooting, which occurred near the intersection of Ennis and Rosewood streets — just steps from the university — prompted a swift and heavy police presence as authorities searched for two fleeing suspects.
The chaos began just after midday when gunfire rang out in the area, shocking students, faculty, and local residents. Witnesses described a scene of confusion and urgency as TSU officials quickly locked down campus buildings to ensure the safety of students and staff. Simultaneously, nearby Yates High School, located at 3650 Alabama Street, was also placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
According to the Houston Police Department, homicide detectives responded to the scene and confirmed that one male victim had been shot and killed. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, but authorities believe it was a targeted attack. Investigators are currently working to piece together what led to the violence.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing two suspects flee the area immediately after the gunfire. Both were later observed entering a getaway vehicle and are currently at large. Descriptions provided by police are as follows:
- Suspect 1: A thin Black male with dreadlocks, wearing a white shirt, dark-colored shorts, and carrying a white bag.
- Suspect 2: A heavy-set Black male, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, also with dreadlocks, wearing a light-colored shirt and a black backpack.
The swift response by local law enforcement helped to quickly secure the area, and both the shelter-in-place order at TSU and the lockdown at Yates High School were lifted later in the afternoon once police determined there was no immediate threat to the public.
Despite the restored sense of calm, the community remains rattled. Students expressed fear and concern about safety, particularly with the close proximity of the shooting to campus. University officials released a statement shortly after the incident, urging students to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
