In Loving Memory of Brayden Hulquist
The community of North Platte is mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of 18-year-old Brayden Hulquist, whose life was tragically cut short on Friday evening in a crash along Highway 83, just north of the city. What began as a simple act of kindness and responsibility ended in tragedy, leaving family, friends, and loved ones searching for strength, understanding, and comfort during this painful time.
According to reports from the Nebraska State Patrol, the crash occurred just before 7 p.m. Brayden and another individual were assisting with a stalled Ford pickup, pushing it out of the northbound lane to ensure the safety of other motorists. In the midst of their efforts, the stalled vehicle was struck from behind by a Jeep Wagoneer. The impact forced the pickup off the roadway, while the Jeep rolled into a nearby ditch. Despite the quick response from first responders, Brayden tragically passed away at the scene. He was only 18 years old.
The other young individual assisting Brayden suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The driver of the Jeep, identified as 49-year-old Kendi McClain of North Platte, was taken to Great Plains Health with minor injuries as well. The incident remains under investigation, but it is clear that the moment was sudden, devastating, and life-altering for all who loved Brayden.
A Young Life Full of Light and Meaning
Brayden was a son, a friend, a neighbor, and a young man with a heart full of kindness. He was known for being respectful, helpful, and genuine—a person others could rely on without hesitation. The fact that his final moments were spent helping someone in need speaks deeply to his character. Even at just 18, he embodied the values of responsibility, service, and care for others.
He will be remembered for his smile that could lighten the room, his laughter that echoed through hallways and gatherings, and his warmth that made others feel safe and seen. Whether he was among friends, with family, or simply moving through daily life, Brayden had a presence that brought comfort and love.
Life had just begun to unfold for him—filled with dreams, plans, and hopes for tomorrow. And while his time here was far too short, the impact he made in his 18 years is one that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A Community in Sorrow
North Platte is a place known for coming together in times of hardship, and now, more than ever, the Hulquist family needs that love and support. Friends, classmates, teachers, coworkers, and neighbors are grieving—remembering Brayden not just for how he died, but for how he lived.
His passing is a reminder of how fragile life is and how precious every shared moment can be. It is also a reminder that heroes do not always wear uniforms or stand on stages—sometimes, they are everyday young people who choose to do the right thing, simply because it is who they are.
Forever in Our Hearts
As we honor Brayden’s memory, may we carry forward the qualities that defined him: kindness, loyalty, compassion, love, and a willingness to help others. Though he is no longer here in physical form, his spirit lives on — in the stories shared, the laughter remembered, the lessons learned, and the love that continues.
May his family find comfort in the outpouring of love surrounding them.
May his friends hold onto the warmth of his presence.
And may Brayden rest in everlasting peace.
