In Loving Memory of Joshua A. Ellis
With heavy hearts, we mourn the tragic passing of Joshua A. Ellis, age 48, of Princeton, Illinois, whose life was unexpectedly cut short in a heartbreaking accident on the Illinois River. Joshua’s passing has left his family, friends, and the local community in deep sorrow as they come together to honor his memory and the life he lived with kindness, laughter, and love.
According to officials, Joshua was last seen on Saturday, October 4, 2025, while swimming across the Illinois River. Witnesses reported that he entered the water from the Marshall County side and was swimming toward the Putnam County side when he suddenly went under and did not resurface. Despite immediate calls for help and the rapid response of multiple rescue teams, efforts to locate him that evening were unsuccessful.
On Sunday, October 5, the Peoria Fire Department Dive Team located Joshua’s body. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Putnam County Death Investigator Robert Cofoid. The tragic incident deeply affected first responders and the many agencies involved, including the Putnam County and Marshall County Sheriff’s Offices, the Illinois Department of Conservation, the Henry and Lacon Sparland Fire Departments, the Henry Police Department, and the Peoria Fire Department Dive Team.
Joshua was known throughout his community as a hardworking and dependable individual who cared deeply for those around him. Friends and family describe him as someone with a generous heart — a man who was always ready to lend a helping hand, share a laugh, or offer words of encouragement when others needed them most. His compassion, humility, and strength were qualities that stood out to all who knew him.
Those closest to Joshua remember his love for the outdoors and his adventurous spirit. Whether it was spending time on the water, enjoying the beauty of Illinois’ natural landscapes, or simply being surrounded by loved ones, he found peace and happiness in the simple things that life had to offer. His easygoing nature and genuine personality made him a joy to be around, and his absence leaves a deep emptiness in the hearts of many.
As the Princeton and Putnam County communities reflect on this tragedy, they also celebrate Joshua’s life — a life filled with friendship, laughter, and love. His memory will live on in the stories shared by family and friends, the lives he touched, and the countless moments of kindness and joy he brought to others.
During this difficult time, the Ellis family expresses gratitude to the first responders and community members who assisted in the search and recovery efforts. Their dedication and compassion have brought some measure of comfort amid profound grief.
