In Loving Memory of Mackenzie Marie Risner and Jan Sebastian Rabie

The state of Arkansas is mourning the tragic loss of Mackenzie Marie Risner, of Manila, and Jan Sebastian Rabie, who both lost their lives in a devastating multi-vehicle collision on State Highway 181, north of County Road 650, on the afternoon of October 3, 2025. The Arkansas State Police (ASP) have confirmed that the fatal highway pile-up was caused by heavy smoke drifting across the road from a nearby burning field, which drastically reduced visibility for drivers.

According to the official crash report, the catastrophic accident occurred at approximately 3:57 p.m. when strong winds carried thick smoke from an actively burning field east of the highway directly into the path of oncoming traffic. Within moments, the dense smoke created near-zero visibility, resulting in a six-vehicle chain reaction that claimed two lives and left two others injured.

Investigators said the tragedy began when a 2018 GMC Terrain, driven by Mackenzie Marie Risner, collided with a 2012 Kenworth truck. The force of the impact sent Risner’s vehicle off the road and into a nearby ditch. Moments later, a 2005 Kenworth, driven by Jan Sebastian Rabie, collided with the same 2012 Kenworth, sparking a fire upon impact. The fiery crash caused the 2012 Kenworth to be pushed into a 2022 Ford F-250, further compounding the chaos on the highway.

In the chain of collisions that followed, a fifth vehicle, driven by Olivia Palmer of Keiser, was rear-ended by a sixth vehicle, causing both the Palmer vehicle and the striking vehicle to veer into the ditch. The sixth vehicle then collided with the rear of Rabie’s Kenworth. Both Olivia Palmer and Keri Palmer, also of Keiser, sustained injuries in the crash but survived. They were treated for their injuries and are expected to recover.

ASP reported that the roadway was dry and the weather was otherwise clear, emphasizing that the heavy smoke from the burning field was the primary factor in the loss of visibility and the resulting crash. Officials confirmed that a farmer was conducting a controlled burn at the time of the accident, which inadvertently produced the dense, drifting smoke that made driving conditions perilous.

The loss of Mackenzie Marie Risner and Jan Sebastian Rabie has left their families and communities heartbroken. Mackenzie, remembered for her bright spirit, kind heart, and love for her family and friends, was a cherished daughter, friend, and community member whose presence brought warmth to all who knew her. Jan Sebastian, described as hardworking, generous, and devoted to those around him, leaves behind a legacy of compassion and dedication that will be remembered always.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, neighbors, loved ones, and community members have come together to express their condolences and share memories of the two lives lost far too soon. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly life can change and how even everyday conditions — such as a field burn — can turn deadly under unforeseen circumstances.

As investigators continue their review, officials urge the public to exercise caution around areas of reduced visibility, especially during agricultural burns, and to prioritize road safety at all times.

Though their lives were tragically cut short, Mackenzie Marie Risner and Jan Sebastian Rabie will forever be remembered for the love, laughter, and light they shared with the world. Their memory will live on in the hearts of their families, friends, and all who were touched by their presence.

May they rest in eternal peace, and may their loved ones find comfort and strength in this time of immeasurable loss.
