Great Falls, Mont. — September 28, 2025 | 10:45 p.m. MT — A quiet Sunday evening in Wolf Point was shattered when reports of gunfire erupted at the Albertsons supermarket parking lot, prompting law enforcement to issue a citywide shelter-in-place order as authorities search for a suspected gunman.
According to the Wolf Point Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 8:40 p.m. after multiple 911 calls reported an active shooting near the Albertsons located at 415 Blaine Street.
Upon arrival, Officer Bushman located two victims. One individual was found deceased at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds. A second victim, gravely injured, was treated on site as Officer Bushman rendered immediate life-saving aid until emergency medical personnel could take over. That victim was then rushed to Trinity Hospital in Wolf Point for further treatment.
The names of the victims have not yet been released, as officials are working to notify family members.
Suspect at Large
Authorities have identified the suspect as Ethan Murphy, 26, who remains at large as of late Sunday night. Law enforcement officials believe Murphy is armed and dangerous, urging the public to exercise extreme caution.
“Residents are strongly advised to shelter in place and avoid unnecessary travel until further notice,” the department said in a public statement. “If you see Ethan Murphy, do not approach him. Call 911 immediately.”
Heavy Police Response
The situation has drawn a multi-agency response. In addition to the Wolf Point Police Department, units from the Fort Peck Tribes Patrol, Criminal Investigation Unit, Wolf Point Fire Department, and the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the ongoing search and investigation. Officers are canvassing the area, checking neighborhoods, and following up on tips regarding Murphy’s possible whereabouts.
Law enforcement officials have not disclosed a potential motive for the shooting, nor have they confirmed whether the victims were targeted or chosen at random.
Community on Edge
The shelter-in-place order has rattled the small northeastern Montana community, leaving many residents anxious as the manhunt unfolds. Social media posts from local residents describe businesses locking their doors early and families huddling inside their homes awaiting updates.
Officials stressed that public safety is their highest priority and assured the community that every available resource is being deployed to track down the suspect.
This remains a developing situation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
