Shooting on Westend Avenue Leaves One Dead, One in Custody
Police are investigating a deadly shooting that unfolded late Thursday on the 300 block of Westend Avenue, leaving one man dead and another in custody.
The initial response
Officers were dispatched to the area after multiple 911 calls reported shots fired around [time not yet released]. When units arrived on scene, they found a chaotic situation and immediately began securing the perimeter. One man, later identified as Jake Wynn, was found suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by first responders, Wynn was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another individual believed to be involved in the shooting was detained by officers without further incident. Authorities have not yet released that suspect’s name or any potential charges.
GBI assisting with the investigation
Because the incident resulted in a death, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been called in to assist local authorities with processing the crime scene and determining the sequence of events. GBI agents were seen working alongside local detectives through the night, collecting evidence, marking shell casings, and photographing the scene.
Investigators said they are still piecing together the circumstances that led to the gunfire. At this stage, it is unclear what prompted the confrontation or if the suspect and victim knew one another.
Community reaction
Residents of the Westend Avenue neighborhood described hearing a series of loud pops, followed by sirens and police flooding the area. Many expressed shock at the violence, while others noted that gunfire has become an all-too-familiar sound in recent months.
“It was terrifying,” said one nearby resident, who asked not to be named. “We hit the floor and didn’t move until the cops showed up. Then we saw the flashing lights everywhere. I just wish this kind of thing would stop happening here.”
Victim identified as Jake Wynn
Authorities formally identified the victim as Jake Wynn on Friday morning. Family members have been notified, and investigators said support services are being offered to the family as they grieve the sudden loss. Friends described Wynn as a young man who “always had a smile on his face” and said they are devastated by the news.
Investigation ongoing
Police and GBI investigators stressed that the case is active and ongoing. For now, no further details about a motive, the suspect’s identity, or whether additional arrests could be made have been released.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the local police department or the GBI tip line.
“This is still very early in the investigation,” a police spokesperson said. “We are working carefully with our state partners to ensure we understand what happened and to bring justice to the family of Mr. Wynn.”
