Chesterfield County Shooting Suspect Arrested Following Road Rage Incident on Midlothian Turnpike

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Police have announced the arrest of a suspect connected to a road rage shooting that occurred earlier this month along one of the county’s busiest stretches of roadway. The incident, which left an adult male with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, has raised concerns about the dangers of escalating confrontations on local roads.

The Incident on Sept. 13

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, officers were dispatched to the 12200 block of Midlothian Turnpike after receiving multiple reports of gunfire. When police arrived, they located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders confirmed that his injuries did not appear life-threatening, and he was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Preliminary findings suggest that the shooting stemmed from a road rage altercation as two vehicles traveled westbound toward the intersection of Midlothian Turnpike and Walmart Way. According to investigators, the suspect’s vehicle—described as a white Nissan Altima—pulled alongside the victim’s vehicle and fired at least one shot. The suspect then sped westbound, fleeing the scene.

Suspect Identified and Arrested

After an extensive investigation involving surveillance reviews and witness interviews, detectives identified the suspect as Armardi A. Johnson, 25, of the 600 block of Elgin Terrace in Richmond.

On the evening of Wednesday, September 24, police apprehended Johnson without incident. He has since been charged with several serious offenses, including:

  • Aggravated malicious wounding

  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony

  • Shooting at an occupied vehicle

  • Shooting from a vehicle

Johnson is currently being held at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond as the case moves forward.

Community and Law Enforcement Response

Police emphasized the dangerous and reckless nature of road rage incidents, noting how quickly tempers can escalate into violence. “This was a situation that could have easily turned fatal,” one officer stated. “Firing a weapon on a busy roadway not only endangers the intended victim but also countless bystanders and motorists.”

The case highlights ongoing concerns about gun violence linked to roadway disputes, an issue that law enforcement agencies across the country have been grappling with in recent years.

Ongoing Investigation

Detectives continue to investigate the events leading up to the confrontation. Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the altercation or who has additional information about Johnson or the incident to come forward.

Community members are encouraged to contact the Chesterfield County Police at 804-748-1251 or call Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660 to provide anonymous tips.

Looking Ahead

While the victim is expected to recover from his injuries, the emotional and psychological impact of such an incident can be long-lasting. Law enforcement officials have underscored the importance of practicing patience and de-escalation on the roads, stressing that no dispute is worth risking lives.

As the case progresses, prosecutors will determine whether additional charges will be filed. For now, the swift arrest provides a measure of relief for residents and underscores the Chesterfield County Police Department’s commitment to ensuring public safety.
