Fatal Shooting in Gas Station Parking Lot

A tragic shooting at a Tulsa gas station late Sunday night has left one man dead and police continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly altercation.

Around 11:20 p.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired at the QuikTrip located at 220 N. Gilcrease Museum Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered 36-year-old Justin Mattingly suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite efforts to render aid, Mattingly succumbed to his injuries within minutes of being found.

Altercation Escalates into Deadly Shooting

Detectives investigating the case determined that the fatal shooting was preceded by a dispute that began inside the convenience store. Surveillance video reportedly shows Mattingly and another man engaged in an altercation, during which the suspect physically assaulted Mattingly. In response, Mattingly is seen making verbal threats toward the man.

The conflict later moved outside into the parking lot, where tensions remained high. A short time after the initial confrontation, Mattingly and a friend—both riding motorcycles—approached the suspect’s vehicle while it was parked at a gas pump. According to investigators, Mattingly kicked the side of the man’s car before appearing to ride away.

As Mattingly began to leave, the suspect, who remained seated inside his vehicle, fired a single gunshot. The round struck Mattingly in the head, fatally wounding him.

Suspect Questioned, Released

Police located and questioned the shooter in the aftermath of the incident. Authorities confirmed that the man was released after providing a statement, and no arrest has been made at this time.

According to the Tulsa Police Department, the decision to withhold immediate charges stems from the complexity of the case and the need for a thorough review of all available evidence, including witness statements and surveillance footage.

Next Steps in the Investigation

Detectives are compiling their findings and will present the case to the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors will then review the evidence to determine whether criminal charges are warranted against the suspect.

Police officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing, and no further details are being released at this time.

Community Impact

The fatal shooting has raised concerns in the local community, as residents grapple with another violent incident in a public setting. Many who frequent the QuikTrip expressed shock and sadness at the loss of life, while also awaiting clarity from the legal system regarding the outcome of the case.
