ST. LOUIS — A shooting inside a busy north St. Louis supermarket Sunday afternoon left one man dead and prompted a large police response as detectives work to piece together what happened.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD), District 5 officers were dispatched around 3 p.m. to the 3400 block of Union Boulevard after multiple reports of gunfire inside a Schnucks grocery store.
When officers arrived, they located an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries, police confirmed. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family.
The incident sent shockwaves through the shopping plaza, where weekend shoppers described moments of panic as customers and employees scrambled for safety after hearing the shots. Police quickly secured the store and surrounding area while homicide detectives began their investigation.
Authorities said they are still working to determine what led up to the gunfire and how many individuals may have been involved. Detectives are reviewing security footage, interviewing witnesses, and collecting evidence from the scene.
“This is an active homicide investigation,” SLMPD said in a statement. “Detectives are working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.”
Police are asking for the community’s assistance. Anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting, or who may have photos or video that could aid the investigation, is urged to contact the SLMPD Homicide Division at 314-444-5371.
