Authorities Identify Woman Killed in Lloyd Expressway Crash

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. — The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman who tragically lost her life following a crash Friday morning on the Lloyd Expressway. Officials say 72-year-old Pamela J. Appel died after being transported to a local hospital with critical injuries.

According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Lloyd Expressway and McDowell Road. The collision involved a semi-truck and an SUV driven by Appel.

Emergency responders arrived quickly on the scene, working to free Appel from her vehicle before rushing her to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, she was later pronounced dead.

Authorities confirmed that the driver of the semi was not injured. The individual remained at the scene and has been cooperating fully with deputies throughout the investigation.

Traffic in the area was significantly disrupted as law enforcement and crash reconstruction specialists worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal collision. The Lloyd Expressway, one of the county’s busiest roadways, was temporarily shut down near McDowell Road while investigators documented the scene and cleared the wreckage. Commuters were diverted to alternate routes, leading to delays across the morning hours.

The Sheriff’s Office has not yet released details about the cause of the crash, noting that the investigation is still ongoing. Deputies are examining whether factors such as speed, visibility, or right-of-way may have played a role in the collision.

Community members have expressed sadness over the loss of Appel, a longtime local resident. Officials extended condolences to her family and friends, acknowledging the deep grief such a sudden tragedy brings.

Fatal crashes along the Lloyd Expressway have been a recurring concern for both law enforcement and transportation officials. The roadway, a major east-west thoroughfare, carries heavy traffic daily, and authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to remain cautious and attentive, especially at intersections.

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office said updates will be provided as the investigation progresses. Until then, drivers are advised to use caution in the area and remain alert for traffic diversions.
