Lubbock Police Identify Man Killed in Thursday Evening Crash

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Lubbock Police Department has confirmed the identity of the man who died following a crash Thursday evening in central Lubbock. Authorities say 44-year-old Jousef Hernandez Cotto was killed in the collision, which occurred in the 200 block of Indiana Avenue.

According to a statement released by LPD, officers were called to the scene around 7:20 p.m. Thursday after receiving reports of a serious crash. When first responders arrived, they located multiple damaged vehicles and quickly secured the area to allow medical crews access to those injured.

Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Cotto was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet disclosed whether anyone else was injured in the crash or the exact number of vehicles involved. Investigators remained on-site for several hours, rerouting traffic in the busy corridor as they collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.

The Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit is leading the investigation. Early findings regarding the circumstances of the crash have not yet been released, though officers confirmed that a full reconstruction is underway to determine factors such as speed, roadway conditions, and potential impairment.

Residents and business owners in the surrounding area described the scene as chaotic, with flashing lights and blocked traffic extending well into the night. Some witnesses reported hearing a loud impact before seeing first responders arrive within minutes.

Cotto’s death marks yet another traffic-related fatality in Lubbock this year, raising ongoing concerns about roadway safety in the community. Officials have repeatedly urged drivers to remain alert, obey speed limits, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.

Authorities have stated that more details will be made available as the investigation develops. At this time, no charges have been filed, and police have not confirmed whether additional parties were directly responsible for the crash.
