One Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash at State Road 1 and Rhein Road
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ind. — A tragic traffic collision claimed the life of an elderly woman Wednesday evening when two vehicles collided at the intersection of State Road 1 and Rhein Road in Franklin County.
The Crash
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to the scene at approximately 5:17 p.m. on September 10. The crash involved a 2010 Ford Fusion and a 2021 Toyota Tacoma.
Preliminary findings suggest that the Ford Fusion, driven by 81-year-old Rosa Banks of Laurel, Indiana, was entering the intersection from Rhein Road when it was struck on the driver’s side by a southbound Toyota Tacoma traveling along State Road 1.
The impact caused catastrophic damage to the Ford Fusion. Emergency personnel pronounced Banks deceased at the scene.
Victims and Injuries
A passenger in the Ford Fusion, 33-year-old Robbie Dale Rae, sustained injuries but was treated at the scene by EMS crews. Authorities did not specify the extent of those injuries or whether Rae required hospitalization.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma, 32-year-old David Tyler Hokey, was not reported to have sustained any injuries.
Investigation
The crash remains under investigation by Sgt. Adam Henson of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department. At this stage, investigators do not believe that alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
Officials will continue to analyze roadway evidence, vehicle positioning, and witness statements to determine the contributing factors. Investigators noted that the rural intersection where the crash occurred has limited visibility, which may be reviewed as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Letts EMS, the Brookville Fire Department, and the Franklin County Coroner’s Office. Their coordinated efforts secured the crash site, treated survivors, and assisted with recovery operations.

The death of Rosa Banks, a longtime Laurel resident, has left the small community mourning. Neighbors described Banks as kindhearted and active in her church, often seen volunteering at community events.
