SMYRNA, Del. — Delaware State Police have identified the man who died in a fatal motorcycle crash early Friday morning near Smyrna as 59-year-old Joseph Laclair of Clayton. Authorities said the tragic incident has left family, friends, and the local community grieving.

According to police reports, the crash occurred shortly after 3 a.m. on a rural stretch of road just outside Smyrna. Laclair was riding his motorcycle when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of the vehicle. The motorcycle struck a roadside object, causing severe injuries that proved fatal at the scene.

First responders from the Delaware State Police and local EMS units arrived within minutes. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, Laclair was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released information indicating whether another vehicle was involved in the crash.

Delaware State Police spokesperson Sgt. Mark Hoffman confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that officers are working to determine the exact cause of the crash. “This is a tragic loss for the family and the community,” Sgt. Hoffman said. “We urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact Delaware State Police to assist with our investigation.”

Friends and neighbors of Laclair described him as a dedicated family man and an avid motorcycle enthusiast. Many shared memories of his kindness, generosity, and love of riding, noting that he often participated in local motorcycle events and community rides. “Joe had a big heart and was always looking out for others,” one friend said. “It’s heartbreaking to lose him in such a sudden way.”

The crash has prompted renewed attention to motorcycle safety in the Smyrna area. Delaware State Police reminded motorists to be vigilant on the roads, especially during early morning hours when visibility is limited, and urged motorcyclists to follow all safety precautions, including wearing helmets and protective gear.

The roadway where the crash occurred was temporarily closed to allow investigators to process the scene and collect evidence. Traffic delays were reported in the area as the investigation was conducted.

Delaware State Police also emphasized that impaired driving, speeding, and distracted driving are critical factors in motorcycle accidents. While there is no indication that these factors contributed to Laclair’s crash, the department reiterated the importance of safe driving practices for both motorcyclists and motorists.

Funeral arrangements for Joseph Laclair have not yet been announced. Family, friends, and members of the local community are mourning his loss, remembering him for the joy he brought to those around him and his passion for riding motorcycles.

As the investigation continues, authorities ask that the public respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time and to provide any information that may help clarify the circumstances of the crash.
