Traffic Stop Turns into Drug Bust: Officers Seize Cocaine and Fentanyl
A routine traffic stop on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, led to a dramatic foot chase and the seizure of a significant quantity of illegal drugs, thanks to the swift actions of two officers.
Attempted Escape Ends in Arrest
Officers Brandon Antone and James Mello, both members of the department’s Patrol Bureau, initiated a motor vehicle stop after observing a violation. However, instead of complying, the driver—43-year-old Miguel Saavedra—suddenly exited his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
Officers ordered Saavedra to return to his vehicle, but he ignored their commands, sparking a brief but intense foot pursuit. The officers quickly apprehended Saavedra a short distance away, securing the situation before it could escalate further.
A Shocking Drug Discovery
Upon searching Saavedra’s vehicle, officers uncovered a large stash of narcotics, including:
- 19.5 grams of a white substance believed to be crack cocaine
- 81 blue glassine bags containing a substance believed to be fentanyl
- Drug distribution paraphernalia, including a digital scale and plastic baggies
Serious Charges Filed
As a result of the investigation, Saavedra now faces multiple charges, including:
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License (along with additional traffic violations)
- Trafficking Cocaine
- Possession with Intent to Distribute a Class A Substance (Fentanyl)
Authorities emphasize that fentanyl is one of the deadliest drugs on the streets, contributing to a devastating opioid crisis. Even a tiny amount can be lethal, making the removal of these 81 fentanyl-laced bags a crucial step in protecting the community.
A Department Committed to Public Safety
The department commended Officers Antone and Mello for their quick thinking, professionalism, and determination in taking these dangerous substances off the streets.
“This is yet another example of the dedication our officers show every day,” a department spokesperson stated. “Their diligence prevented a large amount of fentanyl and crack cocaine from being distributed, potentially saving lives.”
