Active Shooting at Silver Lake Sand Dunes Leaves Visitors Terrified, Authorities Investigating

Silver Lake, Michigan — What began as a typical summer afternoon at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, a popular destination for families, off-road enthusiasts, and vacationers, turned into a scene of panic and chaos after an active shooter incident unfolded on Sunday. Authorities say multiple people were injured and hundreds fled for safety as law enforcement raced to secure the area.

The Incident

According to preliminary reports, the shooting began around 3:45 p.m. when gunfire erupted near the main ORV (off-road vehicle) section of the dunes. Witnesses said they initially thought they were hearing “popping” noises from engines or fireworks, but quickly realized the sounds were gunshots.

“At first, we thought it was just backfiring from the trucks on the dunes,” said one visitor. “Then we saw people running, and someone yelled that people were being shot. Everyone started scrambling.”

Law enforcement from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) responded to the scene within minutes. Visitors were evacuated from the dunes and surrounding campgrounds while tactical teams searched for the suspect.

Victims and Response

Authorities confirmed that at least four individuals sustained gunshot wounds. They were transported to hospitals in Ludington and Grand Rapids for treatment. Their conditions have not yet been made public. Emergency medical helicopters were also spotted landing in nearby fields to expedite transport.

Witnesses reported scenes of confusion as families attempted to shield children and off-road drivers abandoned vehicles to escape the area. Campgrounds and beach access points were temporarily shut down as a precaution.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

By 5:15 p.m., Sheriff Craig Mast announced that a male suspect had been taken into custody without further violence. Authorities have not released his name or motive but confirmed he acted alone.

The sheriff emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the public, though the dunes will remain closed until investigators complete their work.

Community Impact

The Silver Lake Sand Dunes are a major summer attraction, drawing thousands of visitors each week. The shooting has left both locals and tourists shaken.

“This is supposed to be a place where families come to have fun,” said one long-time dune rider. “Nobody comes here thinking they’re going to have to run from bullets.”

Local businesses, already struggling with the busy season, have also been impacted by the sudden closure of the area. Campground owners expressed their support for victims while bracing for cancellations in the coming weeks.

Next Steps in the Investigation

The Michigan State Police Major Crimes Unit is assisting local authorities with evidence collection, interviewing witnesses, and reconstructing the timeline of events. Investigators have not yet disclosed whether the suspect had a connection to the victims or if the attack was random.

Counseling services are being offered to families and visitors who experienced the traumatic event.

Sheriff Mast concluded the evening press briefing by praising the swift response of law enforcement and first responders, noting that their quick action likely prevented further casualties.
