Authorities: One Dead After Water Emergency on Shannon Lake, North of Hibbing

HIBBING, Minn. – Authorities have confirmed that one person has died following a water emergency Tuesday afternoon on Shannon Lake, located north of Hibbing on Minnesota’s Iron Range.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies and rescue personnel responded to the lake after receiving reports of a possible drowning. Upon arrival, emergency crews initiated search efforts both in the water and along the shoreline. Shortly after, responders located and recovered the victim’s body from the water.

Officials have not yet released the identity, gender, or age of the deceased, pending family notification. Details about how the incident occurred remain limited, and it is unclear whether the victim was swimming, boating, or engaged in another activity on the lake at the time.

Shannon Lake, a smaller and relatively quiet body of water surrounded by wooded areas, is popular among locals for fishing, kayaking, and summer recreation. While it is generally considered calm, authorities caution that even familiar lakes can pose hidden dangers such as sudden drop-offs, cold water temperatures, strong currents in certain conditions, and submerged hazards.

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led to the water emergency. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office has not yet indicated whether foul play is suspected, but they emphasize that all drowning investigations follow a thorough review process, including interviews with any witnesses present.

“This is a heartbreaking outcome,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this incredibly difficult time.”

The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of water safety, especially as late-summer recreation draws people to Minnesota’s lakes and rivers. Authorities urge anyone spending time on the water to wear life jackets, stay aware of weather conditions, and avoid swimming alone.

This remains a developing story, and officials say additional information — including the victim’s identity — will be released as soon as it becomes available.
