Jerry was not only a Past President, Past Commissioner, and Life Member of the department—he was a brother, a mentor, and a friend whose unwavering dedication to the community will never be forgotten.

Jerry passed away after a life devoted to service, leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, compassion, and an unyielding commitment to helping others. His loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of serving alongside him, and by the countless lives he touched through decades of public service.

Gerard Killenberger’s life was rooted in purpose and patriotism. He began his service to country by enlisting in the United States Navy, proudly serving from 1956 to 1962. Those who knew him say his time in the Navy shaped his strong sense of discipline, leadership, and camaraderie—values he would carry with him throughout his life.

After his military service, Jerry continued to serve in the line of fire as a proud member of the New York City Fire Department, where he worked tirelessly for 34 years, eventually retiring as a Fire Marshal. His dedication to the job went beyond the call of duty. Colleagues and fellow firefighters remember him as a steady presence in times of chaos, a man whose calm under pressure and commitment to truth earned him the deepest respect in one of the most demanding professions in the world.

Beyond the FDNY, Jerry was a lifelong advocate for emergency services, becoming a Life Member of the Goshen Volunteer Ambulance Corps. In every role he took on, he led with his heart and served with integrity.

In Goshen, Jerry’s presence was more than just professional—it was personal. He was an integral part of the community, contributing not only as a firefighter and EMT, but as a neighbor and friend. Through Minisink Hook & Ladder Co. #1, he helped train the next generation of volunteers, kept traditions alive, and was a guiding force in firematic and administrative leadership roles.

Jerry had a deep respect for service and ceremony. He showed up, suited up, and stood beside his brothers and sisters in fire service with pride and humility.
