In Loving Memory of Raquan Wilson
Wilmington, North Carolina — A Life Cut Short, A Community in Mourning
WILMINGTON, N.C. – A heavy cloud of sorrow now looms over the Wilmington community as residents come to grips with the tragic and untimely death of Raquan Wilson, a 34-year-old father, son, and friend, who was fatally shot in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 6, 2025. The sudden act of violence has shaken the city and left family, friends, and neighbors grieving a life taken far too soon.
Raquan, affectionately known to many as “Quan,” was much more than just a name in a headline—he was a bright light in the lives of those who knew him. A native of Wilmington, Raquan was known for his big heart, vibrant smile, and deep loyalty to those he loved. Whether you knew him from school, the basketball courts, work, or around the neighborhood, one thing was certain—Raquan made people feel seen, valued, and uplifted.
His death—so sudden, so violent—has left a community asking why and how. Wilmington Police responded to reports of gunfire in the early hours of Sunday morning and arrived to find Raquan critically injured. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene and en route to the hospital, he succumbed to his wounds. Investigators are continuing their work to piece together the events leading to his death, and the search for answers continues. No arrest has been made at this time, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
In the wake of this tragedy, Raquan’s family is devastated. His mother, still in disbelief, describes him as “a protector, a provider, and a man who always wanted to do better—for himself, for his kids, and for his community.” Raquan was a loving father, whose greatest joy came from being a dad. He worked hard, often juggling multiple jobs, to provide a better life for his children. He dreamed of owning his own business one day and giving back to the community that raised him.
Friends and loved ones have created a makeshift memorial near the site of the shooting—candles, photos, flowers, and handwritten notes now mark the spot where his life was stolen. Vigils are being planned, and a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help his family with funeral expenses and to provide for his young children in the days and years ahead.
Raquan’s death is not just a personal loss for his family—it’s a loss for Wilmington. He was a symbol of potential, of resilience, and of the daily fight to rise above circumstances. His passing is a harsh reminder of the ongoing epidemic of gun violence that continues to claim lives and break families across the nation, often without warning and without justice.
But in the pain, there is also unity. The community has come together to mourn, to remember, and to call for peace, justice, and change. Those who knew Raquan vow to honor his legacy not with more violence, but by lifting each other up—by mentoring young men, creating safer spaces, and pushing for accountability and healing.
To those who loved him: we see your pain, and we grieve with you. To the community: your cries for justice are heard. And to Raquan: your life mattered. Your memory will not fade. You will be remembered in your children’s laughter, in your family’s resilience, and in the continued work to build a better, safer Wilmington.
Rest in power, Raquan Wilson.
Gone far too soon, but never forgotten. 🕊️🖤
“He was someone who always had your back. He loved hard. He wanted better—and he deserved better. We will not forget.”
