Michael “Cabover Cowboy” Sobieniak Jr.: Beloved Trucker and Toledo Native Passes Away at 50
With profound sadness and heavy hearts, the family and friends of Michael F. Sobieniak Jr., affectionately known as “Mike Cabover Cowboy,” announce his passing on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the age of 50. Mike passed away peacefully at his home in Toledo, Ohio, surrounded by the tools, memories, and legacy he built with his own two hands.
Born on November 14, 1974, in Toledo, Ohio, Mike was the beloved son of Michael Sobieniak Sr. and Joanne (Kurtzman) Sobieniak. From an early age, Mike’s heart belonged to the open road. He was captivated by the rumble of diesel engines and the gleam of chrome against the horizon—trucking wasn’t just his career; it was his calling.
A Life Built on the Road
Mike’s journey into the trucking world began behind the wheel of a 1969 Diamond Rio, a truck he drove for Jack Gray Transport. That truck was more than just a machine—it was the beginning of a lifelong passion and an identity that earned him the nickname “Cabover Cowboy.” Mike had a deep respect for classic rigs, the history of the American trucking industry, and the brotherhood that connected drivers across highways and state lines.
In the early 2000s, Mike took his dream one step further and launched Sobieniak Trucking, a business that would eventually grow into a respected and successful fleet operation. Through grit, determination, and a relentless work ethic, Mike built his company from the ground up, hauling freight and forging relationships across the Midwest and beyond. His trucks were known for being clean, well-maintained, and proudly driven—just like their owner.
A Cowboy at Heart
To those who knew him, Mike was more than a trucker—he was a storyteller, a mentor, a loyal friend, and a man of unwavering principles. He had a gruff exterior softened by a kind heart. Whether you were a fellow driver in need of help on the road, a young kid dreaming of trucking life, or a neighbor in need of a hand, Mike was always there.
His 1982 Kenworth K100—lovingly referred to as “His Baby”—was his pride and joy. Even as his business expanded, Mike never parted with it. He lovingly restored and maintained it for years, treating it not just as a machine, but as a piece of his soul. In keeping with his final wish, Mike will take one last ride in “His Baby,” a fitting tribute to the miles he traveled and the legacy he leaves behind.
Remembering Mike
Mike is survived by his loving parents, Michael Sr. and Joanne Sobieniak, extended family, his team at Sobieniak Trucking who became like family, and countless friends and colleagues from the trucking world who were touched by his wisdom, humor, and unwavering spirit.
As we say goodbye to this true road warrior, we find comfort in knowing that his journey continues beyond the highways we know. Mike’s life reminds us that passion and purpose, when pursued with authenticity, leave an indelible mark on the world.
Celebration of Life
Arrangements are currently being made to honor Mike’s life, and details will be announced in the coming days. Family and friends are encouraged to bring photos, stories, and memories to share, especially from the road. Truckers from near and far are invited to join in a convoy tribute to celebrate Mike’s final ride.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a trucking safety or driver support organization, in honor of Mike’s lifelong commitment to the industry he loved.
“Keep the wheels turning, Mike. You’ve earned your rest. We’ll see you down the road.”
