Tragic Highway Collision Claims Life of Airdrie Woman Near Highway 9

ALBERTA – (June 15, 2025) — A devastating highway crash near the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 836 has claimed the life of a woman from Airdrie, Alberta. The tragic collision, which occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, June 14, 2025, is being remembered not only for its heartbreaking outcome but also for the heroic actions of bystanders and members of a nearby Hutterite colony who rushed to assist before emergency responders arrived.

According to Alberta RCMP, the fatal crash involved a head-on collision between a semi-truck and a pick-up truck. The force of the impact was severe enough that both vehicles immediately caught fire. Despite the intense flames and the danger posed by the wreckage, courageous passersby and local residents from a nearby Hutterite community intervened, using available tools and resources to suppress the blaze until fire crews from Rosebud and Rockyford were able to reach the scene.

Tragically, the female driver of the pick-up truck, a resident of Airdrie whose identity has not yet been publicly released, was pronounced deceased at the scene. RCMP confirmed that the injuries sustained in the crash, compounded by the fire, left no chance for survival. Authorities are working to notify next of kin and continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

A third vehicle, an SUV, narrowly avoided the wreck by swerving into a ditch. Fortunately, the occupants of the SUV were unharmed, but shaken by the experience. Investigators are gathering witness statements and examining road conditions, vehicle data, and possible contributing factors such as visibility, speed, and mechanical failure.

“This was a tragic incident, but we are grateful for the selfless acts of those who stepped in to help,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Kelly Grant. “Without their quick response, the outcome could have been even more catastrophic. Their bravery reflects the strength and compassion found in our communities.”

Highway 9 was closed for several hours on Saturday as police conducted an extensive scene investigation and cleanup crews worked to remove the damaged vehicles. Traffic was redirected, and motorists were advised to avoid the area during the closure.

The loss has reverberated throughout the Airdrie community and beyond, with friends and neighbors already expressing their grief and condolences on social media. Tributes describe the woman as a kind-hearted and vibrant individual, devoted to her family and beloved by those who knew her.

“This is such a tragic loss. She was a wonderful person, full of life and warmth,” one friend wrote in a post. “She didn’t deserve this. Our hearts are broken.”

As investigations continue, RCMP urge any additional witnesses or individuals who may have dashcam footage from the area between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. on June 14 to come forward and contact the Strathmore RCMP detachment.

This incident marks yet another reminder of the risks on Alberta’s highways and the need for caution, vigilance, and respect for all who share the road. The community mourns alongside the victim’s family and loved ones, united in sorrow and committed to honoring her memory.

May she rest in peace.
