Obituary: Joshua “Josh” Terrill, Beloved Student-Athlete of Glenbrook South
Glenview, IL – It is with profound sorrow that we share the passing of Joshua “Josh” Terrill, a cherished student-athlete at Glenbrook South High School, who succumbed to complications from Guillain–Barré Syndrome (GBS). His untimely departure has cast a heavy shadow over the Glenview community and the Glenbrook South family .
Born in Glenview—likely around 2007 or 2008—Josh grew up with an extraordinary spark. His radiant personality uplifted those around him, and he quickly emerged as a natural on the track, earning admiration both as a dedicated competitor and as a teammate whose kindness transcended the scoreboard.
At Glenbrook South, Josh balanced academics and athletics with remarkable ease. He was a prominent figure in the school’s track & field program, where he excelled in sprint and relay events. Known for his warm smile, relentless work ethic, and encouraging spirit, he made a lasting positive impact on coaches, peers, and younger students alike.
Outside the school setting, Josh’s contributions to the local community were equally notable. Whether volunteering at youth camps or lending a helping hand at community events, Josh embraced every opportunity to serve with grace and humility. His generosity and willingness to support others spoke volumes about his character.
Sadly, Josh’s life was cut tragically short. After developing Guillain–Barré Syndrome—a rare, autoimmune condition affecting the peripheral nervous system—his condition deteriorated despite receiving medical care. The speed and severity of his illness shocked all who knew him, as he passed away shortly following his diagnosis .
Josh’s loss is deeply felt. At Glenbrook South, the track & field complex now feels quieter, the locker rooms emptier, and the school halls a little dimmer. Friends remember him for his infectious laughter, pre-race pep talks, and fierce competitive spirit. Teachers recall his eagerness to learn, his polite demeanor, and how he lifted class morale simply by being himself.
Tributes have poured in from classmates, coaches, and community members. Many recall his encouraging words at meets: “Let’s go, Terrill team,” a phrase that soon came to define his inclusive leadership. A fellow student shared:
“Josh always made sure no one felt left out—whether you were leading the pack or just running to stay fit.”
Beyond athletics, Josh was a devoted friend, brother, and community volunteer. His absence is already deeply felt, and his family—who have asked for privacy during this unbearably painful time—are being supported with love and care by neighbors, classmates, and school staff.
A memorial service will be held next week at Glenbrook South, with details to be announced. The school and community are also exploring a lasting tribute—such as naming a scholarship or plaque in Josh’s honor—to uphold his memory through empowerment and excellence.
