Mass Shooting at Mountain View Pool Party Leaves One Dead, Eleven Injured: Catawba County Authorities Seek Public’s Help

CATAWBA COUNTY, NC — A festive summer gathering turned into a night of terror when gunfire erupted at a large pool party in the Mountain View community near Hickory early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of one man and injuries to eleven others. Local law enforcement officials are now calling on the public for assistance as the investigation unfolds into what they have described as a “chaotic and tragic” event.

According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at a residence on Walnut Acres Drive, where approximately 100 people had gathered for a widely promoted pool party. Authorities confirmed that admission fees were charged, and the party had been advertised on social media platforms.

Homeowner Not Present During Party

In a press briefing, Major Aaron Turk of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office provided significant updates. He confirmed that the homeowner was not present during the event and that investigators are working to determine whether the homeowner was aware of the party or the financial arrangements surrounding it.

“The best information we have now is that it was an advertised party on social media,” Major Turk stated.

Officers had previously responded to the home earlier in the evening due to a noise complaint. Deputies made contact with individuals overseeing the party, who agreed to turn the music down. Although deputies issued warnings about safety and the growing size of the crowd, they had no legal grounds to shut down the event, as it was taking place on private property.

Shooting Erupts from Neighboring Yard

Investigators have determined that the shooting originated from an elevated area in a neighboring yard. Some guests at the party were also armed, and eyewitness reports suggest that gunfire was exchanged after the initial shots rang out.

“It appears to us that the shooting initiated from that elevated position in the neighbor’s yard, and persons that were attending the pool party were also armed,” Turk said.

It remains unclear whether the return fire from partygoers was defensive or retaliatory, and Major Turk emphasized that authorities are still piecing together what exactly transpired during the shooting.

One Dead, Eleven Injured

Authorities have identified the victim as Shawn Patrick Hood, 58, of Lenoir, North Carolina. Hood was reportedly at the party to assist with promotion efforts, although his exact role remains under review. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eleven other individuals sustained injuries, ranging from minor to serious. Emergency crews responded to the chaotic scene and worked to transport the wounded to area hospitals. The current conditions of the injured parties have not been disclosed publicly.

Investigation Faces Challenges

Due to the large number of attendees, the investigation has proven particularly difficult. Witnesses have been reluctant to provide information, which has hampered efforts to identify those involved.

“It’s challenging because it was a large party, and we’re still trying to track down witnesses,” Turk noted.

To aid the ongoing investigation, the Sheriff’s Office has partnered with Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE), which is now looking into reports of underage drinking and other potential legal violations by the party organizers.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is also assisting and has offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and prosecution of any individuals involved in the shooting.

Authorities are urging the public—particularly anyone in the area of Pittstown Road and Bethel Church Road—to come forward with any video surveillance, doorbell footage, or information they may have. Community in Shock

The violent eruption of gunfire at what was supposed to be a celebratory summer event has left the Mountain View community stunned. Local residents have expressed fear and concern over the growing trend of large, unsanctioned gatherings promoted online, particularly when they involve alcohol, weapons, and minimal oversight.

Community leaders are calling for stricter enforcement of laws related to party promotions, social media advertising of large gatherings, and the illegal sale of alcohol or charging of entry fees at private residences.

Ongoing Coverage

As the investigation moves forward, authorities promise to keep the public informed of major developments. The case remains active, and officials are determined to bring those responsible to justice.
