Tragic Overnight Shooting at Columbus American Legion Leaves One Dead, Suspect in Custody
COLUMBUS, GA — A somber Monday morning began with tragedy for the Columbus community after a fatal shooting outside the American Legion on Cusseta Road left one man dead. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a male victim in the parking lot suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was quickly identified as Berry Benton, a 37-year-old local resident. He was transported by EMS to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital, where emergency medical staff attempted life-saving measures. Sadly, Benton was pronounced deceased at 2:14 a.m. by an emergency room doctor.
Violent Crimes Unit Takes Lead on Investigation
The Columbus Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene and has since taken the lead in the investigation.
