Tragedy on the Salt River: 54-Year-Old Man Dies After Tubing Accident in Maricopa County

MARICOPA COUNTY, AZ — A relaxing Memorial Day weekend turned tragic along the Salt River after a 54-year-old man lost his life in a tubing accident near Sheep’s Crossing Recreation Center. Authorities have identified the victim as Stephan Sweet, whose untimely death has left family, friends, and the local community in mourning.

The incident occurred late Saturday morning, just after 10 a.m., when the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) received a report of a man found unresponsive and underwater at the popular recreation site. According to MCSO, Sweet had been floating on the river in an inflatable tube when he suddenly fell off and became unconscious.

A witness at the scene reported that after falling off his tube, Sweet failed to resurface properly. Nearby Good Samaritans quickly rushed to his aid, pulling him from the water and immediately initiating CPR in an attempt to save his life. By the time deputies arrived, several people were already performing life-saving measures in an effort to revive him.

First responders from the sheriff’s office then took over CPR and transported Sweet to Bus Stop 2 near the bridge—a designated emergency access point along the river—where they met with emergency medical crews. Despite their best efforts, paramedics pronounced Stephan Sweet deceased at the scene.

Officials say no signs of foul play have been discovered. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding Sweet’s fall and what may have contributed to the fatal incident. It remains unclear whether alcohol, medical issues, or other environmental factors played a role.

The Salt River is a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike, especially during holiday weekends. Tubing along the river can provide a peaceful and enjoyable experience, but this tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers involved. Water safety experts continue to stress the importance of wearing personal flotation devices (PFDs) and remaining alert to changing water conditions.

As news of Sweet’s passing spreads, those who knew him are reflecting on a life gone too soon. Described by acquaintances as kind, adventurous, and full of life, Stephan Sweet’s death has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a weekend of relaxation and celebration.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details but continues to investigate. They encourage all rivergoers to take water safety seriously, especially during peak seasons when the river is at its busiest.

Authorities also extend their gratitude to the individuals who attempted to save Sweet’s life, praising their quick response and selflessness during such a dire moment.

As the investigation continues, the community holds Stephan Sweet and his loved ones in their thoughts, remembering a man whose life ended far too soon amid the beauty of Arizona’s natural landscape.
