NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV — Man Killed in Fiery Crash Involving Construction Vehicle Near Cheyenne Avenue
A tragic accident in North Las Vegas has claimed the life of a man following a collision involving an SUV and a construction vehicle on Wednesday afternoon. The crash occurred just before 2:00 p.m. in the area of Cheyenne Avenue and Slit Canyon Street, near Decatur Boulevard, prompting a significant emergency response and resulting in the closure of a busy stretch of roadway.
According to the North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD), officers responded to reports of a serious crash involving a westbound SUV and a construction vehicle. Upon arriving at the scene, authorities discovered the SUV driver had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on-site.
Sequence of Events
Initial investigations indicate that the SUV was traveling westbound on Cheyenne Avenue when a construction vehicle unexpectedly entered its lane of travel. The SUV collided with the heavy equipment and, following the impact, veered out of control.
Police say the force of the crash caused the SUV to continue traveling westbound, cross the entire span of the eastbound lanes, and ultimately crash into the fence surrounding the North Las Vegas Airport, where it came to a stop. The front end of the vehicle was reported to be severely damaged, and debris was scattered across the intersection.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators are currently working to determine the primary cause of the crash and whether speed or impairment may have been contributing factors. The driver of the construction vehicle remained on the scene and is cooperating with authorities. No other injuries were reported.
“This is a tragic event, and we are working diligently to understand exactly what led to this fatal collision,” an NLVPD spokesperson said during a media briefing. “We urge drivers to remain alert, especially when traveling near active construction zones.”
Road Closures and Traffic Impact
In the aftermath of the accident, Cheyenne Avenue was closed in both directions between Decatur Boulevard and Tonto Street, leading to significant traffic delays in the surrounding area. The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada advised motorists to seek alternate routes while the scene was cleared and investigators conducted their work.
As of late Wednesday evening, the road remained partially closed as crews worked to remove the damaged vehicles and repair infrastructure impacted by the crash, including the airport fence.
Community Reaction
News of the fatal crash has sparked concern among residents and drivers who frequent the area. The intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Decatur Boulevard is a well-traveled corridor known for heavy traffic and ongoing development projects.
“This area has been under construction for months, and it’s become more dangerous for everyone—drivers and workers alike,” said one nearby resident. “We need more safety measures in place, especially when these large vehicles are merging into traffic.”
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin. The Clark County Coroner’s Office is assisting in the investigation.
Safety Reminder
Law enforcement is using this incident as a sobering reminder of the risks involved in construction zones and high-traffic areas. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, avoid distractions, and remain vigilant—especially around heavy equipment and machinery that may unexpectedly enter roadways.
As the investigation continues, police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information to contact the North Las Vegas Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit.
