Woman Taken in for Questioning in Hit-and-Run Jet Ski Death of Teen Kayaker in North Texas
Authorities in North Texas are investigating a tragic hit-and-run incident on the water that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old woman over the holiday weekend. The Texas Game Wardens confirmed that a woman has been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the death of Avan Moore, who was fatally injured while kayaking.
The incident occurred at a popular lake in the Grapevine area, where Moore was kayaking when she was struck by a jet ski operated by a woman later identified as Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez. According to officials, the collision took place during a busy holiday outing, with several recreational boaters and jet skiers on the water.
On Monday, authorities released a photo of the woman believed to be responsible for operating the jet ski at the time of the collision. By Tuesday, Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez was taken in as a suspect in the case. Law enforcement sources say she was not alone during the incident; a passenger was also on the jet ski.
In a shocking turn of events, authorities revealed that Gonzalez fled the scene immediately after the crash. Her passenger, however, stayed behind and cooperated with first responders and investigators. The passenger’s statement has been crucial to the ongoing investigation.
Adding to the chaos, police said Gonzalez left the scene in a vehicle driven by an unidentified man. In their hasty departure, the man reportedly struck another vehicle, compounding the hit-and-run nature of the case. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the man who assisted in her escape will face charges, but they are actively pursuing all leads related to the incident.
Avan Moore was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital following the crash. Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel, Moore succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving. Her death has shaken the local community, many of whom are calling for justice and increased safety enforcement on the water.
Investigators have not yet disclosed whether alcohol or other impairing substances played a role in the crash. The Texas Game Wardens and Grapevine Police Department are working closely together on the case, and have urged the public to come forward with any information that may aid in the investigation.
“This is a heartbreaking case. A young life was lost due to someone’s recklessness and decision to flee instead of helping,” said a spokesperson for the Grapevine Police Department. “We are committed to finding all the facts and ensuring accountability.”
Authorities continue to collect witness statements, analyze surveillance footage from the lake area, and gather forensic evidence related to the jet ski and vehicle involved.
Anyone with information related to the case — particularly those who may have witnessed the crash or the individuals fleeing the scene — is urged to contact the Grapevine Police Department. Tips can be provided anonymously.
As the community mourns the loss of a vibrant young woman, questions remain about how such a tragedy could have occurred — and how future incidents can be prevented on North Texas waterways.
