Ava Armstead Obituary – Lima Central Catholic High School Mourns the Sudden Loss of 15-Year-Old Volleyball Star

LIMA, OH — A deep and heartbreaking silence has settled over Lima Central Catholic High School and the wider Lima, Ohio, community following the tragic and sudden passing of Ava Armstead, a beloved 15-year-old student and rising volleyball talent. Ava passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025, leaving behind a trail of grief, unanswered questions, and memories of a young woman who touched countless lives with her joy, spirit, and kindness.

Described by those closest to her as “one of a kind,” Ava’s loss has left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, teammates, coaches, and teachers — a void that words can hardly begin to fill.

A Bright Light Gone Too Soon

Ava was a sophomore at Lima Central Catholic (LCC), where she had already established herself as a standout student-athlete. Known for her powerful serve, unwavering focus on the court, and leadership beyond her years, Ava was a rising star in the LCC volleyball program. Coaches believed she had the potential to take her game to the collegiate level — and beyond.

But it was Ava’s warmth, not just her athletic ability, that left a lasting impression.

“She wasn’t just a great player, she was a great teammate,” said one of her coaches. “Ava had a presence that lifted everyone up. She led by example, always gave her best, and made those around her feel like they mattered.”

Off the court, Ava was an honors student, a loving daughter and sister, and a loyal friend. Her peers describe her as funny, compassionate, and full of life — the kind of person who could turn a bad day around with just a smile or a kind word.

A Community in Mourning

The news of Ava’s passing has sent shockwaves through Lima and beyond. Students, faculty, and families gathered in somber vigils throughout the week, lighting candles and writing tributes to honor her memory. The outpouring of love has come from every corner of the community — fellow schools, athletic rivals, and even strangers touched by her story.

Lima Central Catholic High School released a statement expressing its condolences and offering support to grieving students and staff:

“We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of our student, Ava Armstead. Ava was a bright and talented young woman who embodied the values of our school both in and out of the classroom. She will be remembered for her kindness, her drive, and the joy she brought to our school. Our prayers are with her family, teammates, and everyone who loved her.”

Grief counselors have been made available at the school, and community members have been invited to share memories and photos as a way to keep Ava’s legacy alive.

A Legacy of Strength, Joy, and Grace

Though Ava’s time on earth was brief, her impact was profound. She taught others about resilience, humility, and grace. Whether she was training in the gym, laughing with friends in the hallway, or volunteering in her church youth group, Ava made an imprint on the lives around her — one marked by kindness, laughter, and deep empathy.

Her family, still reeling from the devastating loss, described her as the “heart of our home.”

“Ava had the brightest soul,” her mother shared. “She was wise beyond her years, full of love, and determined to make her dreams come true. We are broken without her, but we are so proud of the young woman she was becoming.”

Honoring Ava’s Memory

Plans are underway for a celebration of life service to honor Ava, with the entire Lima community expected to attend. Friends have also begun organizing a scholarship fund in her name to support young athletes with the same passion and dedication Ava brought to every game.

A memorial volleyball game is also being planned at Lima Central Catholic in her honor — not just to remember her talent, but to celebrate the teammate and friend she was to so many.

In the meantime, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist with funeral expenses and to support the Armstead family as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy.

Rest in peace, Ava Armstead. You were a light in this world, and your legacy will live on in every heart you touched. Though gone far too soon, you will never be forgotten. Your teammates will play for you. Your school will remember you. And your family, friends, and community will carry your light forward — always.
